As with any new technology, there are positive and negative consequences to consider. The Internet is no exception. Just found out about a web site that gives, in my opinion, an alarming amount of data about individuals. You can check out the Channel 7 news story and learn how to remove your personal information from their data base: http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/23597239/detail.html
Another interesting story I found which goes into the ways Facebook and My Space have been sharing data with advertisers, which is not going over well with online privacy advocates. Check out Facebook Shared Personal Data With Advertisers Without Users Consent, by Sam Gustin. Seems this subject is getting some attention. Perhaps, there will be enough pressure to protect individual rights.
Even if the information is not accurate, it could compromise you in ways you might not expect. As I have mentioned before, be sure any details you provide is either locked up tightly via security settings, or is information that serves your purposes. Also, periodically check to be certain your settings have not been overridden by policy “updates” initiated by the site.
